Hot take: I thought people were just nostalgic calling The Thing a masterpiece, but I was wrong
I finally sat down to watch John Carpenter's The Thing last weekend after hearing my buddy rant about it for like 5 years. Ngl, I figured it was just another cheesy 80s horror flick with rubber monsters that people my dad's age pretend holds up. But man, the practical effects are actually insane. That dog transformation scene still looks better than most CGI stuff coming out today. The paranoia and tension hit different when you can't trust any character. It blew past my expectations and now I get why people say modern horror leans too hard on jump scares and weak plots. Has anyone else had a movie they were dead wrong about?

Same thing happened with me and Aliens. Put it off for years because I thought people were just hyping up an old action movie, but it's genuinely tense and well-made.

Yeah I was the same way honestly. Always figured it was just another 80s shoot em up, but the pacing and the queen reveal totally changed my mind. Did you have a favorite scene that sold you on it?
