The day I realized I'd been playing Ocarina of Time wrong for 20 years
So I've been replaying the N64 version on my old CRT since January, and I always thought the Water Temple was unfairly hard. I'd get stuck on the same rotating pillar room for like 3 evenings straight every time I got to that point. Then last Saturday my buddy Mike came over and watched me play for maybe 10 minutes. He just pointed at the screen and said, 'you know you can play the Song of Time on those cracked blocks, right?' I legit thought that was only for the ones with the big glowing triangle. Turns out I'd been wasting bombs and hookshotting around every single time. I felt like a total fool, but also kind of proud that I'd brute-forced my way through it all these years. Has anyone else had a moment where you found out you'd been missing something super basic in a classic game forever?
you can play the Song of Time on those cracked blocks" made me laugh so hard because I did the exact same thing with the hookshot in Majora's Mask. I spent hours trying to hookshot across these gaps in the Stone Tower Temple, getting so frustrated I almost quit. Then my little cousin picked up the controller, played the Elegy of Emptiness on a random platform, and I just stared at the screen for a solid minute. I had no idea those specific platforms were meant for that song, I thought they were just decorative. So yeah, I feel your pain, but honestly it's kind of cool that we figured out workarounds without the game telling us.
