A guy at my local game store in Tulsa told me to stop buying expansions until I'd played the base game 10 times
I laughed at him because I love collecting expansions, but he was right for my group. I had 8 unplayed boxes on my shelf and we kept arguing over setups instead of actually playing. So I set a rule: 10 plays before any new box hits the table. Three weeks later we've played more Catan and Wingspan than we did all last year, and the arguing stopped. Has anyone else tried a play count rule, or do you just buy whatever looks fun?
The "8 unplayed boxes on my shelf" part hit way too close to home. I counted mine last month and it was 11, which is basically a shame shelf at that point. My worst one was a Kickstarter I backed two years ago and the rulebook is still in the shrink wrap. So yeah, the play count thing sounds smart but I already know I'd break my own rule on day one. The arguing over setups part is real though, we spend like 20 minutes just picking what to play.
