Question about picking a game for a group of new players

I had to choose between teaching my friends Ticket to Ride or Catan for our first game night, and I went with Ticket to Ride because it seemed simpler. It went really well, but now I'm wondering if Catan would have been just as good for a group of five.

Catan's building phase actually keeps five players engaged.

Catan with five players can get really slow and frustrating for new people.

Yeah, that special building phase just means everyone gets extra time to stare at the board and wonder why they built next to wood again. You can almost see the new players' will to live drain away between turns. It turns a fun game into a test of patience.

The five to six player expansion for Catan actually adds a special building phase, @beth711, so it doesn't slow down as much as you'd think!
