That $60 kickstarter expansion was a total dud, read the rulebook next time
Last month I backed a game expansion on a whim, paid $60 with shipping and tax. The box showed up, I tore it open, and half the new cards are just reprints with different art. The new module adds like 10 minutes of setup for maybe 2 extra decisions per game. My group tried it once and we all agreed to just play the base again. Has anyone else gotten burned by a flashy expansion that turned out to be filler? How do you vet these things before you hand over cash?
Honestly, I see it a little differently. Those extra setup minutes and the couple of new choices might not seem like much, but for our group that’s exactly the poke we needed to get back to the table after we’d worn out the base game. Reprints with new art bug me too, but sometimes a fresh coat of paint makes the old stuff feel new again when you’re staring at the same cards for the hundredth time. I’ve been burned way harder by expansions that completely broke the balance, so a boring but safe one is almost a relief. I vet things now by waiting a month after release and reading the board game geek forums, not the kickstarter page, because the hype folks always oversell it.
Taking the whole waiting a month thing even further, I basically ignore the first wave of reviews now. Like, day one impressions are always gonna be from people who got free copies or are just hyped on the unboxing, so they never mention the real problems. I'll wait until the second printing fixes are announced or till I see people complaining about specific card interactions, that's when you know the actual game is good. Saved my wallet a few times doing that, for sure.
