Went to a local game cafe in Denver and watched someone flip a table after losing Catan

I was at this place called Tabletop Tavern last Friday night, grabbing a beer and trying out a deckbuilder. This one dude in the corner was losing hard on Catan, no resources for like 20 minutes. He just stood up, grabbed the edge of the table, and sent the whole board flying across the room. Tokens and cards everywhere. The staff kicked him out but nobody even offered to help clean up. Has anyone else seen a game night go that bad in public?

Wait, are you saying nobody helped clean up? That's a shame, but I get it. I used to think table flipping was something only happened in movies or bar fights. But a couple years back at a local brewery game night, I watched a grown man lose his cool over Ticket to Ride and knock over a display rack. Seeing the aftermath made me realize how easy it is for a bad losing streak to push someone over the edge. Now I try to keep an eye on people who look like they're having a rough time, maybe offer a breather before it gets to that point.

That bit about keeping an eye on people who look like they're having a rough time, is that something you actually do or just something you thought about after the fact? Seems like most folks would rather just watch the trainwreck from a safe distance than step in and risk getting yelled at themselves. What would you even say to someone who's clearly about to snap mid-game?

Three times last year I saw guys lose it at board game night, and I just let the host or their friends handle it. I've never once stepped in myself because honestly, what am I supposed to say to a dude who's already throwing pieces around? "Hey man, wanna take a walk" sounds like I'm trying to get them alone lol. Most people in that moment just want to be left alone to cool down, not have some stranger telling them to breathe. The whole "watch for signs" thing feels like armchair psychology that falls apart when you're face to face with someone who's genuinely pissed off.
