That tube sheet leak took me 3 whole shifts to track down
Kept chasing a weeping tube in a feedwater heater, swapped gaskets twice and still had dampness. Finally found a hairline crack in the channel head that only showed up after dye penetrant on the 4th attempt. Anyone else had a leak that turned out to be the shell itself, not the tubes?

Spent a WHOLE weekend once chasing a phantom leak in a heat exchanger. Replaced every damn tube gasket, torqued the flange twice, even had the wife bring me a fresh flashlight at midnight. Turns out the shell had a pinhole right under the nameplate. I felt like a genius who flunked the test. Now I check the shell FIRST before I blame a single tube, lesson learned the hard way. My scrap bin is full of perfectly good gaskets that took the blame for that one.
