The old boilermaker in Gary told me I was torquing my manway studs all wrong, and he was right
He showed me at his shop on Broadway that going in a star pattern at 3 passes instead of one full pull stopped my gasket leaks on a 60 inch drum after 8 years of fighting them, so what torque sequence are you all running on big manways?
Took me way too long to figure out that one full pull on a 60 inch was basically me just hoping real hard and calling it torque. Doing 3 passes in a star pattern makes sense now, each pass seats things a little at a time instead of one side grabbing first and cocking the whole cover. @nguyen.blake going 4 passes on a 72 inch tracks with what I have seen, bigger the manway the more passes it seems to want. What torque values are you hitting on each pass, like 30 percent then 60 then full, or are you just feeling it out with the wrench?
