Book club debates got way more heated after we switched genres mid-year

We used to stick to literary fiction for almost 4 years and everyone was chill, then someone suggested a thriller and half the group wanted to quit. What broke your book club's peace?

Yeah that's so true. When people know the vibe of the room they just say whatever fits in. But flip the topic or switch the perspective and suddenly they drop the mask. It's wild how fast someone goes from agreeing with everyone to showing their real hot take. Kinda makes you wonder how much of what people say online is just them playing along.
