My home network was a mess until I switched from a single password to a guest network

For years I just gave everyone my main Wi-Fi password when they visited, which meant like 20 random phones and laptops were on my network. Last week my smart lights started acting weird and I realized my nephew's friend was probably messing with stuff. I set up a separate guest network with a different password in about 10 minutes using my router's app. Now visitors get internet but can't see any of my other devices, and everything works perfectly again. Anyone else set up a guest network after a weird tech issue?

My prized Monstera in Austin got a bad case of thrips and I almost lost it

I was away for a week and came back to find the leaves on my big Monstera, named Frank, covered in silvery streaks and tiny black bugs. I panicked and immediately isolated it, then spent the next three days wiping every single leaf with a mix of water and a little dish soap. It took about a month of consistent treatment, but Frank finally pushed out a healthy new leaf. Has anyone else in a hot, dry climate found a better long term fix for thrips?

I was picking up some 2x4s in Springfield last Tuesday and this older carpenter was telling his apprentice that 120 grit is the sweet spot for anything that's getting painted or hidden. He said going finer just wastes time and clogs the paper faster. I've always gone to 150 out of habit, but his point about time and cost stuck with me. It got me wondering about other little time-saving tricks we all do without thinking. What's your go-to grit for rough lumber that's not a show piece?

My bathroom tile job in Phoenix went sideways when the mortar set way too fast

I was laying subway tile in my guest bathroom last summer, and the bag of mortar I bought said it had a 45 minute pot life. Maybe it was the 110 degree heat in my garage, but it started getting chunky after like 15 minutes. I panicked and tried to add more water, which just made it worse and ruined a whole batch. I ended up having to scrape off a few tiles I'd already set and mix a new, much smaller batch inside with the AC on. Has anyone else had mortar or grout cure way faster than the bag says, and how do you deal with it?

Hot take: I thought those cheap universal dryer belts were a total waste of money

For the longest time, I wouldn't touch those $8 universal dryer belts you see at the big box stores. I figured they were junk that would snap in a month. Then I got a call for a 15-year-old Whirlpool dryer in a rental unit. The tenant needed it fixed fast and the owner wanted the cheapest possible fix. I grabbed a universal belt as a last resort. I was sure it would be a callback, but that was six months ago and the owner just called me for a different machine, saying the dryer is still running fine. I've used them on three other basic models since with no issues. I'm not saying they're great for every job, but for an old unit on a tight budget, they can actually work. Has anyone else had a decent run with these, or did I just get lucky?

Why bother with careful mapping at all? Just force everything into a single format and make the old systems adapt. The extra work to map each field perfectly is a waste of time when you can just pick one standard and push it through. Most data mapping problems come from trying to please every legacy system instead of just making a clean cut. Let the tricky part break, then fix what's left.

Look at the upside though, the data they collect makes things work better for you. That smart thermostat learns your schedule to save on bills, and those targeted ads mean you see stuff you might actually want instead of random junk. About @drew_mitchell's cousin, maybe the ads were a coincidence, or maybe seeing pet food ads after a loss is just bad timing from an algorithm, not a spy. We trade some info for real convenience, and most companies have privacy settings if you look for them. It's not a robbery if you get useful services in return.
