Had to pick between the hardcover and the paperback for book club this month
I chose the hardcover because I wanted it to look nice on my shelf but that thing weighs like 5 pounds. Dragging it to my Wednesday night book club at the downtown library was a pain. Plus I paid $28 for it and Sarah got the paperback for $12 and read it in two days. Has anyone else regretted going for the fancy version?

Hardcovers are a trap for book club specifically. You're hauling that brick around and everyone else is breezing through the paperback. Just buy the nice shelf copy for your home and grab the cheap paperback for reading on the go. I keep a separate beater copy for travel and commuting now, saved my back and my wallet.

Noticed this pattern with a lot of stuff honestly. We get caught up thinking we need the "nice" version for everything when really the practical beat-up version does the job way better.

Right? I actually heard this author on a podcast say they write their books expecting people to read them on the train or at the beach, not on a fancy shelf. She said hardcovers are for collectors, not readers. Made me feel better about dropping my paperback in a puddle last week. The book still works fine, just has a wavy page now. That's the whole point, right?
