My book club finally stopped fighting over pacing after one simple rule change
We had three straight meetings where half the group wanted to quit a 500 page novel and the other half called us quitters. Then I suggested we each bring one passage we'd actually underline, no summaries allowed. It took 20 minutes off the arguing and suddenly people talked about specific lines instead of overall feelings. Has this worked for anyone else's group, or do you still do the whole vote-on-the-next-book thing?

Underlining passages just turns book club into a scavenger hunt for pretty lines instead of actually wrestling with the story. A book that drags for 300 pages isn't saved by one nice paragraph, it's a pacing problem that deserves a real fight. Voting on the next pick keeps everyone honest about what they can actually finish together.
