Picked the silent read over group discussion and it backfired hard
Our club in Austin split on whether to do a traditional talk or a 20 minute silent read then share. I voted for silent read because I thought it'd force quieter members to think deeper. We tried it at our March meeting and three people just sat there not writing anything, then the talk fell flat because everyone stuck to their first thought. Has anyone else tried structured quiet time in a group? I'm wondering if we just picked the wrong night since half the room was wiped from work.
Noticed this same thing at work with our team retreats... everyone wants quiet time to think but then nobody wants to be the first to speak up after, so the whole thing just dies. Sounds like the real issue was picking a format that didn't match the room's energy that night, not the format itself. Maybe next time try the silent read but give people a prompt to write one specific sentence before sharing, kind of like a ticket to talk. That way the quiet folks still get their thinking time but there's a clear starting point for the group when time's up.
