The 1948 book club quota fact that floored me
I was digging through old newspaper archives online and found a stat that surprised me. Back in 1948, a club in Cleveland required members to read 12 books a year or they got voted out, and about 30 percent of people quit in the first six months. I always figured book clubs were more relaxed back then, but that quota system sounds tougher than any meeting I've been to. Has anyone else run into weird historical rules like that in their research?
