Vent: my book club's "no spoilers" rule got a bit too literal
Last Tuesday in Portland, our group read "The Nickel Boys" and one member walked in wearing earplugs, saying she wanted to "experience it fresh." She sat there all meeting, not saying a word, and then got mad when someone mentioned the setting. I get wanting to avoid spoilers, but at what point does protecting the reading experience ruin the actual discussion? Has anyone else had a member take a rule so far it backfired?

The whole "experience it fresh" thing is wild to me because she already chose to read the book, right? Like, you cant un-read something by wearing earplugs to a discussion about it, that just doesnt make sense. Did she actually finish the book before the meeting, or was she planning to read it after and just wanted zero input from anyone? Because if she had already read it, then getting mad about the setting is a huge overreaction, thats not even a spoiler, thats just basic context. And if she hadnt read it yet, why even come to the meeting at all? Thats like showing up to a movie theater and covering your eyes during the trailers because you dont want to know what other movies exist.
