Why does every book club ignore the 'unreliable narrator' angle?
I was in a group last week discussing 'Gone Girl' and someone said the twist was just lazy writing. But nobody even brought up how the whole book is a game of trust with the narrator. I think people miss this because they read fast and just want the plot to work, not the trick behind it. Has anyone else noticed book clubs skip the craft talk and just argue about characters like they're real people?

That book club take on Gone Girl bugs me too, but honestly I used to be one of those people who just read for the plot. Then someone pointed out how Amy's diary sections are so smooth and likable, and that's the whole trick. It completely flipped how I see books now, once you spot the narrator playing with you, you can't unsee it. The craft is the story, and arguing about Amy like she's your neighbor misses half the fun.
