Why does nobody talk about reading the last chapter first to settle book club fights?

Our group spent two meetings arguing over a character's fate in 'The Silent Patient', so before our next book, 'Project Hail Mary', I read the final ten pages to see the ending tone. Knowing the finish helped me guide the whole discussion toward the author's big ideas instead of petty guesses. Has anyone else tried this trick with a tough crowd?

Guiding the discussion toward the author's big ideas" is such a smart move, honestly. I feel your pain with those endless prediction arguments.

Actually, it's the teacher's big ideas, not the author's.

Oh man, that reminds me of my history teacher who would argue with the textbook all the time.
