Showerthought: I called those $8 soil moisture meters a scam for 5 years, then my pothos got root rot
I always figured the cheap two-prong meters were junk because everyone on here says you can just stick your finger in the pot. Well, last spring my 6 year old pothos started dropping leaves and I had no clue why, so I grabbed one of those $8 meters off a shelf in Portland just to prove it wouldn't read anything. It turns out I was watering the bottom 4 inches of that pot like a swamp while the top felt bone dry, and the meter showed it plain as day. Now I use it before I touch a single watering can, but I still don't trust it for succulents. Anyone here had one give a totally fake reading, or is it just me?
Had the opposite problem with mine, it read wet when the soil was dry as a bone so I trusted it and almost killed my fiddle leaf. Pretty sure the cheap ones just guess based on whatever the prongs touch near the surface. Sticking your finger in still works fine if you go deep enough, which is the part most of us skip.
