That comment about 'just grow it in a pot' at the garden center made me snap

I overheard some guy at the greenhouse telling his friend that you can grow anything in a container, like it was the easiest thing in the world. Tried growing a dwarf apple tree in a 15 gallon pot last year and it got root rot by August. That advice sets people up for failure and makes them feel like bad gardeners. Has anyone else had a container project completely fall apart on them?

What worked for you, using a fabric pot instead?

Wait, you haven't tried fabric pots yet? I read somewhere that they help with something called "air pruning" where the roots stop circling and grow more fibers instead. Some guy on a gardening podcast I listen to said his plants got way bigger after switching. He also mentioned they dry out faster so you gotta water more often, but that's supposed to be good for the roots too. Just passing along what I heard, might be worth a shot.
