The time my automated plant watering system flooded my living room
I set up this new smart watering system for my indoor plants last week. Somehow it glitched and poured water for hours, so now my rug is soaked and my peace lily is drowning. Do these systems usually have such dramatic fails, or did I just get a lemon?

Hand watering can drown plants too if you're not careful with the amount.

Wow... I was totally in the tech camp before, convinced a timer was the only way to be precise. Hearing stories like yours really flipped a switch for me. It's too easy to just set it and forget it, and then a small glitch causes a huge mess. With a watering can, I'm forced to pay attention and actually look at the soil each time. That simple check keeps things in balance way better than any gadget I've tried.

That "mini lake on your kitchen floor" line got me. My old roommate had a fish tank with an auto feeder. Thing jammed open once and dumped a whole can of flakes in there. Came home to this cloudy soup and two very fat, very dead goldfish. Sometimes the low tech way is just less to go wrong.

My Floraflex timer once ran for three hours and flooded my succulents. I came home to a mini lake on my kitchen floor. The soil was so soggy it ruined the roots of my jade plant. These smart gadgets can be more trouble than they're worth sometimes. I've gone back to hand watering for anything inside the house.
