Found a trick to make bagged rice taste way better without spending extra
I got tired of plain white rice from a bag being so boring. Tried adding salt and butter but it still tasted flat. Then a friend told me to toast the dry rice in a pan for a few minutes before cooking it. Just two or three minutes until it smells nutty and starts to brown a little. Then I cook it with broth instead of water, or even just a bouillon cube dissolved in the water. Makes a huge difference for maybe 10 cents extra a meal. Anyone else do this or got another cheap trick to upgrade plain rice?

Man I tried that and ended up with burnt rice so bad my smoke alarm does a standing ovation every time now. But seriously the broth trick changed my life.

My buddy Mike tried the broth trick after I told him about it and somehow managed to set his kitchen towel on fire. He left it too close to the burner while the rice was bubbling over. Ended up with crunchy rice and a black towel that still smells like smoke a month later. He swears by the broth now though says it's worth the near disaster for the flavor. Sometimes learning the hard way is the only way.

gotta admit, Mike's dedication is impressive. "Worth the near disaster" is a whole mood. At least his kitchen smells like victory and regret now.
