My aunt called my chili 'watery' and it stung so bad I changed everything
She said it right at Thanksgiving dinner in front of everyone. I was mad at first but she was right. I started cutting my ground beef cooking time by 5 minutes and draining the fat way earlier. Then I add a can of tomato paste and let it simmer uncovered for 20 extra minutes. The flavor got way thicker and I didn't have to buy any fancy ingredients. Has anyone else had a family member call out your cooking in a blunt way that actually helped?

My aunt once told me my green bean casserole looked "sad" and honestly she wasn't wrong. It was just a can of soup and some beans thrown together. But that "watery" comment would've stung me too, especially at Thanksgiving. I love how you turned that insult into a legit upgrade though, that's basically a pro move. Sometimes the bluntest family members give the best cooking advice, they just wrap it in pure brutality. At least now your chili is thick enough to stand a spoon in it, so you win in the end.

Oh man, @sethfoster, did that aunt at least eat some of your upgraded chili?

Hey @kai_webb91, did she ever try to fix your watery chili for you or just critique it? My buddy Dave had a similar thing happen with his mom and her meatloaf, she told him it was drier than a desert and then showed him how to add a little ketchup and Worcestershire to fix it. So yeah, sometimes the brutal ones are the ones who actually help you level up your cooking game in the end.
