My rice cooker gave out halfway through making a big batch of beans and rice last Tuesday
Had to finish everything in a pot on the stove and the bottom burned bad, ended up tossing half the batch and ordering pizza for $12 instead of eating for a week off that $4 bag of beans.

Oh boy, where to start. First off, you don't finish beans and rice in a pot on the stove, you finish it in the oven or a slow cooker if the rice cooker dies. The direct heat from the burner is way too intense for that, it'll scorch every time. Also, Tuesday night pizza for $12 is a steal these days, so that's actually a win in my book. And hey, you lost half the batch, not the whole thing, so you still got some meals out of that $4 bag. Could be worse.

I hear you, @jamief67, but I gotta say the oven method for beans and rice sounds like more trouble than it's worth on a busy weeknight. A good heavy pot on low heat with a tight lid works fine if you just pay attention. Pizza for $12 is definitely a bargain these days though, you're not wrong about that.

Drove my buddy Tom to the store last month after HIS rice cooker died mid-cook. He tried the pot on the burner trick too and ended up with a layer of charcoal on the bottom that took an hour to scrub off. He said the beans tasted like a campfire and he just ate the unburned parts with extra hot sauce. Ended up ordering Chinese takeout for $15 that night instead of saving money like he planned. That burned pot smell lingered in his apartment for three days.
