Stop buying pre-shredded cheese for budget meals
It costs almost twice as much per pound as a block and you're paying for sawdust basically. Has anyone actually done the math on their grocery list?

Yeah "sawdust" is kind of a scary way to put it but it's not too far off. I read somewhere that they use powdered cellulose which is basically just wood pulp to keep shredded cheese from clumping. It's totally safe to eat but it's weird when you think about it. My aunt used to work at a grocery store and she said the shredded cheese bags would sometimes have this fine dust at the bottom that looked like flour. Once I started buying blocks and grating my own I noticed the difference too, it melts so much smoother and doesn't leave that weird gritty feeling.

My buddy Jake swore by pre-shredded cheese until he actually weighed out what he was getting. He bought a bag for a taco night and realized it was like 20 percent potato starch and cellulose powder, not cheese. He did the math on his receipt and found he was paying $4.50 a pound for shredded stuff when a block was $2.80. Now he grates his own and says it melts way better too, no weird powdery coating.
