Update: tried dried beans to save money and ruined 4 dinners in a row
So I decided to stop buying canned beans at $1.25 a can and get a 4 pound bag of dried pinto beans for $3.50 instead, thinking I was about to win at this whole budget meal thing. I soaked them overnight, boiled them for what felt like forever, and they still came out hard in the middle, and by the third batch my roommate asked why dinner tasted like dirt and pennies. Turns out our tap water in Tucson is super hard and I never added any salt or baking soda like you're supposed to, which apparently keeps the skins tough no matter how long you cook them. I burned through a whole weekend and about 6 hours of stove time before I figured that out, and I ate a lot of sad rice those nights. Anyone got a method that actually works with hard water, or should I just go back to the cans and eat the cost?
