Warning: I thought those 'dollar store spices' were just colored salt

I bought a jar of cumin for $1.25 at my local Dollar Tree last month, fully expecting it to have no flavor. I used it in a big pot of chili and it was just as strong and good as the $6 jar from the grocery store. Has anyone else tried a specific cheap ingredient that actually worked out great?

Ever try the store brand ibuprofen? Works just as fast for me and saves a few bucks every time.

Got me thinking about how often we pay for the brand name and the fancy jar, not the stuff inside. I've seen it with tools, with cleaning supplies, even with food. That little logo costs so much. Makes you wonder what else we're overpaying for just because it's in a nicer part of the store. Your cumin story is a perfect example of finding the real deal without the fancy label.

Look at my grocery bill from last week and tell me why the fancy ketchup cost three times more. Same tomatoes, same vinegar, just a glass bottle with a label that looks old-timey. I feel like a fool every time I fall for it.
