Why does nobody talk about using canned fish for cheap dinners
Last week I was staring at a nearly empty fridge in my apartment near downtown Portland and decided to try canned mackerel in my pasta instead of tuna. It was only $1.50 a can and honestly it was way more flavorful than I expected... mixed it with some garlic I had and a squeeze of lemon. Has anyone else tried cooking with the cheaper fish cans from places like Winco or Grocery Outlet?

Did you cook the mackerel right in the pasta or did you heat it separate? I tried it once and ended up with fishy pasta water that I couldn't get rid of. Might have been the brand I bought though.

Nobody talks about using canned fish for cheap dinners" - I see people talking about it all the time on here and budget cooking subs. But yeah, mackerel is slept on, way less dry than tuna and cheaper too.

Oh yeah, I throw mackerel into all kinds of stuff now. Brown it in the pan first with some garlic, then add it to pasta or rice. Keeps it from getting weird in the water.
