My $40 mistake at the Rome train station taught me about day bags

Last spring I had a layover in Rome and figured I'd stash my big backpack in a locker while I explored for 5 hours. The station charged me 6 euros per hour instead of the flat rate I assumed, and the total ate half my lunch budget. I later found out that most European stations price lockers by size and time slot, not by the day, so I started carrying a cheap foldable daypack to keep valuables on me. Has anyone else gotten burned by locker fees, or do you just skip them and drag your luggage around instead?

My buddy got wrecked in Munich with a similar deal, paid like 12 euros for a few hours and barely had cash for a beer after. He now just wears a cheap crossbody bag under his jacket and leaves the big luggage at the hotel even if it means going back early. Honestly, the foldable daypack is the move, but only if you actually remember to use it and don't leave it in the bottom of your main bag like he did.
