My weird trick for getting a free night in Barcelona

I was stuck in Barcelona with a canceled flight and zero budget for a hotel, so I looked up local university events. Ended up at a free astronomy lecture at Universitat de Barcelona, and the professor mentioned they had empty dorm rooms for visiting researchers. I asked nicely and got a basic room for the night, no charge. Has anyone else tried the 'pretend to be an academic' hack when stranded?

That "polite and not pushy" part is key for sure.

That's a clever idea, honestly. It probably works best at smaller schools or during off-peak times when they have extra space. Just gotta be polite and not pushy about it.
