Overheard my coworker say bullet journals are just expensive to-do lists

Was grabbing coffee in the break room last week and this guy from accounting said bullet journals are 'just fancy to-do lists for people who like wasting money on washi tape.' I didn't say anything but it got me thinking... he's not totally wrong for simple setups but he's never seen what a good spread can do for tracking habits or big projects. I've been using mine for 8 months to keep my warehouse shift schedules straight and it saved me from double booking twice now. Has anyone else had to defend their journal to someone who just doesn't get the system?

A buddy of mine thought the same thing until his sister made him one to track his kid's hockey practice and doctor appointments. He's three months into it now and I catch him looking at washi tape online.

See I get why people love the whole bullet journal thing but I just can't get into it man. @hayden_craig95 I feel like it adds more stress trying to keep the journal looking nice than just using a regular calendar or phone app. All those stickers and different colored pens and the pressure to have perfect handwriting. I tried one once and spent more time decorating the cover than actually writing anything down. Ended up just going back to my old system of sticky notes everywhere and Google calendar reminders. Feels like half the people doing it are just looking for an excuse to buy cool stationery instead of actually being more organized.

The whole point is that it doesn't have to look good at all, you just need a notebook and a pen. Some people go crazy with the decoration but that's just their own thing, not the actual system. At its core bullet journaling is just a simple way to organize your life on paper without any fancy rules.
