A mechanic in Pittsburgh said one thing that made me rethink cutting off my brother
My brother borrowed $2,000 for a car repair three years ago and never paid it back. I stopped answering his calls after that, told myself he was a leech. Then last month I was working on a unit at a shop in Pittsburgh and the owner mentioned how his own brother screwed him over a decade ago. He said he still talks to his brother, just keeps him at arm's length and never loans money again. That hit different because I went straight to burning the bridge instead of setting a boundary. Has anyone else found a middle ground with family who burned you once, or is walking away always the cleaner move?
...the other bank of the family river, you know? My sister borrowed my car for a weekend and returned it with a dent the size of a dinner plate and zero explanation. I did the whole dramatic cut-off thing for like six months, and honestly it felt good until Thanksgiving got awkward for absolutely everyone else. What finally worked was just resetting the rules. I told her straight up I'm not mad about the dent, but I'm also never handing over my keys again, and if she needs a ride she can ask like a normal person. It's not the same as before, but it's way lighter than carrying around all that anger. Your mileage may vary, but sometimes a bridge with a toll booth beats no bridge at all.
