I stopped sitting in the third row at family dinners after what my cousin pulled at Easter
My cousin Dave grabbed my plate at Easter dinner in front of everyone and said I didn't need seconds because I'm "already big enough." I laughed it off, but then he spent the rest of the meal bringing up my divorce to my grandma like it was entertainment for him. I sat there for 45 more minutes just staring at the wall clock, and when I got home I blocked his number. Now I only go to family stuff that's at neutral spots like restaurants, and I sit at the opposite end of the table. Has anyone else had to cut off a relative over one single dinner, or is that too harsh?
That line about staring at the wall clock for 45 minutes hit me hard because I did the exact same thing at a Thanksgiving years back. My uncle kept making jokes about my weight and my job in front of everyone and I just sat there frozen. What worked for me was skipping the sit down dinners at my aunt's house and only showing up to the restaurant ones, same as you. It's not too harsh at all, blocking him was the right move and you don't owe anyone a front row seat to your own bad time. If people ask why you're at the other end of the table just say you like the extra elbow room and leave it at that, no need to explain yourself.
