Showerthought: I blew $230 on a used commercial meat grinder at an auction in Tulsa and it never ran right
Saw it at a farm auction last spring, looked clean, motor spun when they plugged it in on the trailer. Got it home and the auger was worn so bad it just smeared the meat instead of pushing it through, ground 10 pounds of pork shoulder into paste before I figured it out. New auger and a new plate set ran me another $140 on top of the $230, so I was in almost $400 for a machine that still runs hot after 20 minutes. My old $99 hand crank does the same job slower but it never quits on me. Here is the debate though, some guys say rebuild the old iron because new grinders are junk, other guys say buy once and get a real one with a warranty. I lean toward buying new after this mess but I want to hear from folks who actually grind daily. What is your cutoff, do you fix old gear or just pay up for new?
That line about the auger smearing the meat instead of pushing it through hits home, been there with a used grinder myself. In my experience the money math almost never works out on the used stuff unless you enjoy the tinkering part, which some guys honestly do. My cutoff is simple, if the fix costs half what a new one runs, I walk away and put that cash toward new. Your old hand crank still working says a lot though, sometimes slow and boring beats fast and broken. Take that with a grain of salt but I would say pay up once for something with a warranty and stop the bleeding.
