My week-long trip with a cheap duffel bag taught me a lesson about zippers

Last summer I took a train from Boston to Chicago with a $25 duffel bag I grabbed at a department store. By day three in Chicago, the main zipper split open and I had to carry my dirty clothes in a plastic bag from the hotel. It made me realize I should have spent the $100 on a solid canvas bag with a metal zipper instead. Has anyone else had a cheap bag fall apart on a trip and wish they'd bought quality?

Duffle bags are the worst for that. I learned the same lesson with a backpack that had a cheap zipper. It gave out halfway through a trip to NYC and I spent the rest of the weekend carrying it like a clutch purse. The plastic bag thing is real. I ended up using a shopping bag from Duane Reade for my socks. Now I only buy bags with YKK zippers and canvas or Cordura fabric. Those $25 bags are really just for short trips where nothing bad can happen.

My buddy had the exact same thing happen with a duffle on a bus to Boston.
