Walked into a camera store in Austin last week and saw a repair bench set up in the front window
I was in Austin for a wedding last weekend and stopped by a camera store on South Congress to kill an hour. Right there in the front window, next to the new bodies and lenses, was a full repair bench with a guy doing a shutter job on an old Nikon FM2 where everyone walking by could watch. Half the people outside were pressing their faces to the glass like it was a zoo exhibit. Part of me thinks this is great, because it shows folks that cameras get fixed instead of tossed, and he had a sign with pricing and a 5 day turnaround. But another part of me thinks repair work needs quiet and focus, and doing it behind glass turns a craft into a show. Plus if you fumble a spring in front of 20 strangers, that is a bad look. Would you ever work where customers can stare at you all day, or is the back room the only sane place for a bench?
