Talked to a guy who had camped in Alaska for 30 years and he said sleeping bags are a waste of money if you have the right layering system

He told me he just uses a wool blanket and a bivy sack even in 10 degree weather and now I am wondering if all these $400 bags are actually overkill or if he was just a tough old timer, has anyone else tried ditching the sleeping bag for a different setup?

I get it, that old timer sounds like he knows his stuff, makes you question everything.

My old man once told me the secret to a good lawn mower carburetor was to shake it like a Polaroid picture, then tap it with a wrench. I followed his advice for a year before realizing he was just messing with me, but the mower still ran fine somehow. Anyone else got a piece of "expert" advice that turned out to be pure BS?

Honestly @xena_bailey18, have you tried just writing down what that guy said and checking it against what you already know? I did that with my old mentor's advice on distributors once, pulled out a notebook and scribbled his exact words. Turned out he was dead right about timing being more important than brand names, saved me a ton of headache later. Sometimes hearing it from someone who's been in the trenches makes all the difference.
