That $140 lantern from REI vs the $25 one I got at a gas station, 2 winters apart
My fancy rechargeable lantern died on the third night of a January trip near Big Bend, so I grabbed a cheap butane model from a roadside stop and it kept burning through 18 degree temps with zero issues. The expensive one needed a full charge every 6 hours, but the cheap one ran all weekend on one little canister. Has anyone else seen budget gear beat premium stuff after a real field test, or did I just hit a bad batch?

Man, that's brutal, and honestly kind of hilarious how the cheap stuff just refuses to quit. I've totally been there with gear failing at the worst possible moment, so I feel your pain.

Feeling that pain right along with you. Just last month my old backup battery finally gave up mid-shoot, and I had to scramble through a whole wedding with the good camera nearly dead. It's like the universe picks the worst moments to remind you that cheap gear is either gonna outlive you or die at the exact second you need it most. Keep your head up, man, at least you got a good story out of it.
