Back in 2019 I used to just post whatever I was angry about on the campus message boards without checking facts first. Last semester I got called out in front of 50 students for sharing a misleading flyer about a guest speaker. Now I always run posts past a friend first has anyone else had to change how they speak up on campus?

My roommate freshman year got banned from the dining hall group chat because he kept posting screenshots of people's bad takes and making fun of them. Eventually a group of girls complained to the housing office and he had to write an apology letter. Now he just sends everything to me in a private message and I tell him if it's gonna blow up in his face. Having a filter even if it's just one person seems to make things smoother, learned that the hard way too.

Realized something reading this that nobody's really pointed out yet - the filter person isn't just saving you from getting flamed, they're also lowkey keeping you from becoming the villain of your own story. When my cousin started dating this girl in our friend group, he'd send me every argument they had wanting validation and I'd have to be like "bro, you left out the part where you said something shady first." Without that check, he would've painted himself as the victim to the whole group and looked like a jerk when the full story came out. Your roommate dodged that too, because posting those screenshots would've made him look like the bad guy even if the other people had bad takes. Sometimes the filter is really about protecting your own character, not just your reputation.

Yeah, that "filter, even if it's just one person" thing is huge. I've got a buddy who does the same thing with me. He'll send me some wild take he wants to post and I gotta be like "dude, that's gonna get you flamed." It's like having a pre-check before your brain hits send. The worst part is when you don't have that person and you just let it rip. I've seen people get completely destroyed in group chats because they didn't run it by anyone first. One bad post can mess up your whole reputation for the semester.
