Why does nobody talk about how dark humor helps process real grief
After my grandma passed last month, I cracked a joke about her awful raisin cookies at the wake and my cousin nearly choked on her tea, but the whole room burst out laughing and it actually broke the tension in a way nothing else could have.

I get it helped you but dark humor makes grief feel weirder for me.

@gray_morgan, fair enough, laughing at dark stuff can feel disrespectful in the moment. My uncle passed last year, and my cousin cracked a joke at the viewing that had half the room horrified and the other half snorting. Grief is a weird beast, and different people wrestle it differently.

The real issue might be that dark humor forces you to sit with the discomfort instead of running from it. Most people want grief to feel clean and predictable, but it isn't, so jokes just highlight how messy everything really is. Maybe it's not about disrespect, it's about how the joke pulls the rug out from under how you're SUPPOSED to feel.
