Had a chat with my teenage nephew last night that messed with my head
He told me cancel culture is just 'public accountability with consequences' and that got me thinking. He pointed out how a video of a girl at his school got 50k shares before anyone even checked if it was real. Has anyone else had their view shifted by talking to someone from a younger generation?

I mean, "public accountability with consequences" sounds all serious and grown up, but idk if it's that deep. Like, yeah, the girl's video getting 50k shares before anyone checked it is messed up, but that's not really cancel culture is it? That's just people being dumb and spreading stuff without thinking. Cancel culture to me is more about like, famous people losing their jobs over old tweets, not some random high school drama. Maybe it's just me but I feel like we're giving a teenage hot take a little too much credit here.

Nah, cancel culture covers all of it though, not just famous people. The whole point is mob mentality punishing someone before the facts come out, whether it's a celebrity or a random kid in high school. That girl's life got flipped upside down for two weeks because nobody stopped to think. That's the same engine just smaller scale.

Had to talk to my kid about the same thing after he jumped on a rumor train.
