My barber in Cleveland told me he got review-bombed for a joke on his shop sign, and now I'm torn on the response
He put 'free mullet with every bad decision' on the board in March, someone posted it online, and within 48 hours his Google page went from 4.8 to 2.1 stars from people who never set foot in the place, so I keep going back and forth on whether that's fair game or way over the line.
Have you noticed how these review bombings always happen on Google and never on Yelp? That tells you something. Google reviews are the easiest thing in the world to fake and they show up first when someone searches, so a mob can tank a small shop overnight while Yelp's filter catches most of the fakes. So the real problem here isn't whether the joke was okay or not, it's that one website has way too much power over whether a barber eats this month. His sign was funny, maybe a little rude to mullet guys, but a 2.1 star page from people in other states is not a fair response to a joke. That's just a bunch of strangers with too much time and a keyboard.
