My company fired a guy for a five year old tweet and now everyone's scared to post anything online.

Well, nothing says 'progressive workplace' like firing someone for a tweet from five years ago. Companies are basically time travelers digging up past mistakes to ruin your present. It's no wonder everyone is scared to post anything online now. This just turns the internet into a ghost town where no one dares to speak up. Who decided that our old, dumb thoughts should follow us forever? What's next, getting in trouble for a diary entry from middle school?

Seriously though, where do we even draw the line? If someone said something awful five years back, apologized, and has been clean since, does that not count for anything? It feels like we're saying people can't ever learn or get better. What's the point of trying to grow if your past is always gonna be held against you?

Honestly, do we even believe people can change after five years? Tbh my own views from half a decade ago make me cringe sometimes, because I learned better. It's scary thinking a bad joke or a dumb take from back then could wipe out your job now. Feels like we're not allowed to grow up anymore.

Used to believe old posts should stay buried until I saw a guy at my shop get harassed for racist jokes he made online years back. Watching good people avoid him even after he changed made me realize this stuff sticks. Now I get why companies don't want that heat, it can wreck a work team.
