The $15,000 mistake I watched a coworker make at our company retreat in Austin
Last spring our team had a retreat in Austin and they brought in a career coach to do a session on salary talks. One guy on my team, let's call him Dave, stood up and told the whole room what he made. Like exact number, in front of 30 people including two managers. I could see the HR lady's face go pale. Two months later Dave got passed over for a promotion and I honestly think that moment played a part. The guy who got the job never said a word about money to anyone. I'm not saying you should never talk about pay, but doing it in a room full of coworkers and bosses is a different thing than talking to a friend. Since then I keep my numbers to myself and a couple people I trust. Has anyone else seen someone overshare at a work event and pay for it later?
Who thought that was a good idea? Telling 30 people your salary at a work retreat is just handing them ammo. Dave basically wrote his own rejection letter.
