Picked up a old Stanley plane at a garage sale for $5

Last Sunday in Nashville I found a beat up #5 jack plane at a yard sale. Cleaned it up and it cuts like butter now. Anyone else find killer deals on vintage tools that just needed some TLC?

Did you have to lap the sole or just clean up the rust? I found a similar Stanley jack at a flea market for eight bucks a few years back. The iron was chipped but after I flattened the back and put a new bevel on it, it cut way better than any modern plane I've used. A little elbow grease and a good sharpening stone can turn those old tools into absolute keepers.

Yeah lapped the sole too... took a while but worth every minute of it.

I read somewhere those old Stanley planes can rival any modern tool after a good setup.
