Ripped a crown molding in half because I forgot to check the grain direction
I was trimming out a living room in Portland last Tuesday and had a 16-foot piece of poplar that just split clean down the middle when I hit it with the nail gun. Any tips for spotting tricky grain patterns before you commit to a cut?

Last Tuesday I bought a 6 pack of cheap reading glasses and left them on the jobsite. Spent 20 minutes squinting at grain patterns until I realized I was looking at the back of the piece. Now I keep a bright headlamp clipped to my belt and always wipe the dust off the wood before I shoot. Saved me from a few more splits.

Light on the back side of the wood helped me spot wild grain in Douglas fir once.
