That $50 moisture meter I bought off Amazon gave me false readings for 3 months

Cost me a whole kitchen remodel because it kept saying the wood was dry when it wasn't. Anyone else had trouble with those cheap pinless meters or is it just me?

Three months is a long time to be getting false readings... did you ever test it against a known wet piece of wood just to see how far off it was? I've got a cheap pinless meter myself but I always double-check with a pin type on anything important because the pinless ones can get fooled by surface moisture or dense grain. The guy at the lumber yard told me those $50 meters are basically guessing half the time if the wood isn't perfectly flat and clean. What brand was it so I know which one to avoid?

Honestly I wonder if part of the problem is the wood itself. Some of those cheap meter brands have a default calibration that assumes a certain wood species and if yours is way off from that you might as well be flying blind.
