Took me 8 years to realize I was using my hammer wrong

Caught a guy at a jobsite in Denver last fall using the cheek of his framing hammer to set nails instead of the face, and I thought he was nuts until I tried it and drove 16 nails without a single miss. Has anyone else picked up a basic move like that way later than you should have?
