Just found out my coffee shop charges 5% extra for card payments

I went to my usual spot in downtown Austin last week and noticed a new sign by the register. The owner told me they prefer cash because processing fees eat into their profit on a $4 latte. Has anyone else seen places quietly adding fees like this?

Used to side-eye those fees but @juliarodriguez made me see the other side.

A few years ago, I would have said the owner was just being cheap. But then my own bank statement showed how much those swipe fees add up. Credit card companies take around 2 to 3 percent of every sale, and on small items like coffee that cuts deep into the profit. The owner of my local diner explained that he pays about 50 cents on every ten dollar meal. So now I get why they would pass that cost along. It feels annoying but the math is actually pretty simple once you look at it.
