My debit card got locked after a $3 coffee purchase

Stood at the register in a 7-Eleven in Phoenix last Tuesday. Total was $3.12 for a coffee and a bagel. Went to tap my card and it declined. Tried again, same thing. Checked my app and my bank had frozen the whole account. Reason? They flagged it as suspicious because I never use debit there, only credit. Meanwhile my rent payment was scheduled to go through that same afternoon. Spent 45 minutes on hold while the coffee got cold and the cashier stared at me. Got it fixed but it made me wonder - if a $3 coffee nearly bricks my access to my own money, what happens when real emergencies hit? Has anyone else had their bank lock them out over something stupid like this?

My bank flagged a $2.50 taco purchase at 2 AM once and froze my card for three days. I get it sucks but honestly I'd rather them be too careful than let someone drain my account because I bought a coffee. Your rent probably went through fine after you called, right?

Yeah but did they tell you what specifically triggered it?

That $2.50 taco at 2 AM hits different when you're hungry and broke. My bank once locked my card over a $0.99 Steam game purchase during a sale, had to verify I wasn't a bot buying a "Hats for Everyone" expansion. @riverdavis is right though, better safe than sorry even if it feels like they're babysitting your wallet. Did you have to wait on hold for an hour like I did?
