That 3-hour creosote log jam in Harrisburg cost me a full day
Had a job in Harrisburg last Thursday where the flue was so packed I thought my rotary brush was stuck for good. Took 4 hours to break it down with a pry bar and a shop vac, way longer than the usual 45 minutes. Anyone else ever dealt with a dense creosote plug that just wont budge? What did you use to finally clear it?

Heard my buddy Dave talk about the same thing last winter. He ended up using a blowtorch on a steel rod to heat and chip it out piece by piece, took him almost five hours. Said he was ready to just burn the whole chimney down.

I saw a post a while back where a guy used a weighted chain and a lot of patience to crack a plug like that, but he said it took him about as long as your pry bar job. The blowtorch trick from @blairc90 sounds sketchy but honestly kinda smart, even if it's a fire hazard waiting to happen. My uncle swore by using a shop vac with a long hose attachment to pull the loose stuff while scraping, but he also admitted some plugs just need brute force and time. At least you got it done, even if it wrecked your whole day.
